More than 50 Years of Relaying for Windward Oahu (3/4)

For more than 10 years, these legacy Relay For Life of Windward Oahu teams have been “Relaying” for friends, family, and even themselves.

The American Cancer Society Relay For Life movement is the world’s largest fundraising event to fight every cancer in every community. Relay For Life events raise critical funds that help fuel the mission of the American Cancer Society, an organization that’s reach touches the lives of so many – those who are currently battling cancer, those who may face a diagnosis in the future, and those who may avoid a diagnosis altogether thanks to education, prevention, and early detection. Luminaria at Relay For Life of Magic Island

Our third legacy team is Kailua United Methodist Church: Committed to Serve with Love…as told by caregivers and members.

…When my dad was diagnosed with a brain tumor, my Kailua United Methodist Church family was there to pray with me and for my dad and family. They were there to listen to my worries, to let me shed a few tears, and to offer hope.  When our congregation joined the Relay For Life, I could walk in honor of my dad, light a candle for him and feel comforted being with others going through a similar experience. During my dad’s illness, the American Cancer Society provided information about his illness, resources for transportation, and allowed me to borrow equipment to help with his limited mobility.  As a church family, we feel compelled to put our faith into action. Members of Kailua United Methodist Church partnered with the American Cancer Society, so that as a group, we could honor those living with cancer, help families caring for them, and remember those who have left us too soon because of the dreaded disease.  Our 17-year partnership has allowed us to live out our church vision which is to be a “Christ-centered, knowing, loving, and serving ohana.”  We fundraise to support the society’s mission to find a cure and provide resources and educational programs.  We form teams so that others can participate and learn more about cancer prevention and treatment, and how people are living with it.  We encourage our church members living with cancer to participate in the survivor’s lap so that we can cheer them and celebrate another year of survival.  We light candles so that we can honor our friends and family with cancer and remember those whom we miss dearly.  Each of us has a story, we have all witnessed the effects of cancer on a loved one or have experienced it ourselves.  The Relay for Life is a joyful celebration of life, of hope, of tomorrow.  We are grateful to be able to participate, to put our faith in action, to promote healing in a broken world, to create fellowship and community in our congregation and beyond…

The Kailua United Methodist Church invites you to join them at the Relay For Life of Windward Oahu, July 9, 2016, 2-10pm, at Kailua High School.
