Stop Colon Cancer Before it Starts

March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month, and the American Cancer Society is leading the effort to raise awareness and encourage screening for colorectal cancer. The death rate from colorectal cancer has been dropping for the past 20 years, largely because of increased use of screening. Yet fewer than six in 10 American adults (58%) ages 50 to 75 years were up-to-date on screening in 2013.

The Society is part of the National Colorectal Cancer Roundtable initiative of approximately 700 companies nationwide to eliminate colorectal cancer as a major public health problem and have 80% of adults 50 or older screening for colorectal cancer by 2018. Working toward that shared goal will prevent nearly 280,000 new cases of colorectal cancer and more than 200,000 deaths from the disease within 20 years.
