Volunteer Profile – Becki Ward – Finish the Fight Friday

Becki Ward currently serves as the Vice Chair of the American Cancer Society Hawaii Pacific Board of Directors. She is the President and owner of Ward Research, a market research company, with over 35 years of business in Hawaii. Becki shared a couple of interesting facts with us – one, she is a collector of Charlie Chaplin memorabilia and two, that she is a graduate of the FBI Citizens Academy. She also serves as Treasurer on the Board of Directors for Kokua Mau, a statewide agency advocating for palliative care and hospice; Board member with YMCA of Honolulu; and governor- appointed member of the Statewide Health Coordinating Council of the State Health Planning Department.

Becki was recruited to the ACS Hawaii Pacific Board by former member Dr. Ginny Pressler (current Director, State of Hawaii Department of Health) as she knew of Becki’s interest in serving at the Board level in an organization where she felt she could make a difference on something that had impacted her life – the loss of her husband to prostate cancer in 2006. She knows first-hand how lonely it is to be a caregiver and the tremendous resources ACS has to offer and she wanted to reach out to others in the same situation.

She strongly believes in the advocacy efforts of ACS and ACS Cancer Action Network (ACS CAN) in the need for prevention and early detection. Legislation matters when it can provide cancer screening to a greater proportion of the population. She also wants people to know that there is an organization that is committed to those issues and also provides resources for those diagnosed and their families.

Becki has a particular passion for the need for a Hope Lodge to be built in Hawaii to serve those for whom transportation, travel, and lodging present burdens and barriers to treatment and successful outcomes. She knows what it is like to drive a patient to and from treatment when just 20 minutes in a car is agonizing pain and she cannot imagine someone having to endure more. Her HOPE is that others won’t have to encounter those burdens and barriers with the support that will be provided with Hope Lodge.
