Relay For Life of Leeward O`ahu had some very amazing teams this year at Relay. One in particular, Island Insurance, came to us last year with “fire in their bellies.” They made their Relay For Life debut collecting an amazing $9,400 in donations and matching gifts from Island Insurance’s employee matching program and Island Insurance Foundation.
This year, we were dismayed to find out that they decided not to Relay with us because one of their team captains was getting married … the other was having a baby … but most importantly, they were still feeling the impact of losing a long time employee, Jeanette Stone, to cancer earlier this year. It was hard for them to excite their employees during their time of grieving, then … about 1 month prior to Relay, our former committee member, Renee Neill, texted me about their possible interest in Relaying this year as a sponsor and a team.
Within 3 weeks, she found two FANTASTIC team captains, secured a $2,500 sponsorship from Island Insurance Foundation, and lit the fire again. With solid planning, including a bake sale, taco sale, and brownie sundae sale, and day-of bento sale, their Team Captains Rupert and Lini led their team to be our Top Fundraiser with $10,692 collected with matching gifts from Island Insurance! AND … we just learned late last week that Island Insurance Foundation will match their team’s efforts with another $9,000 … totaling $19,692 to our fight against cancer! This team is a perfect illustration of the “Power of One” … this year’s Relay For Life of Leeward O`ahu theme.
